There are only two types of patents awarded to nutritional products:

• The Utility Patent which allows a competitor to change up to 30% of the formulation and still receive a patent on a similar product.
• The Composition Patent which does not allow anyone to change even one ingredient in an attempt to duplicate the product.
  This patent usually reserved for pharmaceutical companies.

The U.S. Patent office awarded Dr. Robert Keller a Composition Patent (number 6,262,019) for his scientific breakthrough product. This means it is totally safe and does what they say it does. At the time it was only the 16th time that a composition patent had been issued for a nutritional substance.
