Selenium: A vital antioxidant, selenium acts with vitamin E to protect the immune system and maintain healthy heart function. It is needed for pancreatic function and tissue elasticity and has been shown to protect against radiation and toxic minerals. High levels of heart disease are associated with selenium-deficient soil in Finland and a tendency to fibrotic heart lesions is associated with selenium deficiency in parts of China. Best sources are butter, Brazil nuts, seafood and grains grown in selenium-rich soil.

Selenium has many uses in the body – it is needed for healthy thyroid function (allowing the T4 to be broken down to T3 to be used) and for immune system to work well – as evidenced through supplementation for healing from cancer and HIV/AIDS. .
Metabolism (running of the entire body – see about 19 minutes in) is dependent upon it = as is all immune system function – anti cancer/AIDS. Known as a major anti oxidant, Selenium is a component of the body’s master anti oxidant Glutathione. Glutathione has to be made to keep a body in top condition – so as an anti aging agent and as repair especially from oxidative stress. This in itself is a key reason for infertility.

Found in Brewer’s yeast and wheat germ, liver, butter, fish (mackerel, tuna, halibut, flounder, herring, smelts) and shellfish (oysters, scallops, and lobster), garlic, whole grains, sunflower seeds, and Brazil nuts – If soil is selenium rich (and if modern farming methods and artificial fertilisers have not been used).
